Bioidentical Hormones

There is a growing interest in more natural approach to hormone therapy via bioidendical hormones. Rather than being synthetic compounded versions of your hormones, bioidentical hormones are derived from natural forms that are found in plants or animals and are created specifically for you to address your needs.

The term “bioidentical” means the hormones in the product are chemically identical to those your body produces. In fact, the hormones in bioidentical medications may not be any different from those in traditional hormone therapy. They are however much more flexible in their modes of delivery, dosage, and combinations, and can be taken as capsules for example and do not all have to be in an injection form.

Why Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT):

For Women-

It has been demonstrated that hormone re-balancing has made it easier for women to lose weight, maintain a healthy diet, and improve energy. This is especially noticeable in older women as menopause and slowing metabolic rates compound with age and are not always gradual. Some women encounter sudden noticeable changes including deterioration of their hair, nails, and significant weight retention. Re-balancing their hormones will help in each of these areas.

Additionally, women will have their skin clear up and appear younger and decreases their risk of some diseases such as osteoporosis. It has also been shown to improve desire for intimacy, reduce anxiety and depression, improve long and short term memory and a host of other issues.

For Men-

Decreased testosterone and other hormonal imbalances significantly impact men and can cause depression, dysthymia, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, mood swings, irritability, sleep impairment, and memory issues. All of which can and have been shown to improve with BHRT.  Additionally, muscle strength, mass, and density are also prolonged as each of these deteriorate with age.

Speak With Your Doctor

Many people have found relief from their symptoms of hormone deficiencies and imbalances.  Both men and women can significantly benefit from hormone replacement therapy and it is something that you should consider checking and measuring over time with your doctor to make sure that your body is functioning properly as you age and avoid unnecessary complications that can easily be addressed.

A common misconception about bioidentical hormones is that they are always custom compounded for each individual.  The fact is bioidentical hormones can be custom-made but do not have to be.  If you are going to have them custom made, be sure to check and make sure that the compounding pharmacist is already well experienced with this to avoid any unneeded adjustments to get the right formula the first time.
